Reservations are required for Chimney Rock State Park on busy weekends. Book online at the NC State Parks website well in advance — spots fill fast in summer and fall foliage season.
Fall foliage (mid-October) and spring wildflowers are peak seasons. Summer weekends are busiest. Weekday visits in shoulder seasons offer the most peaceful experience and better restaurant availability.
A car is essential. Lake Lure, Chimney Rock village, and surrounding attractions are spread across winding mountain roads. Plan 20–30 minutes between locations. Gas up before arriving — options are limited.
Lake Lure has kayak, canoe, and pontoon rentals. The Town Beach is popular in summer. For calmer paddling, early mornings before motorboats arrive offer glassy lake conditions perfect for photos.
Wear proper footwear on all trails — slick rocks are common. Bring more water than you think you need. The Hickory Nut Falls trail is family-friendly; the Skyline Trail offers more challenge and payoff.
