Visitor Tips

Make the most of your Tobaccoville getaway with these insider tips.

🏺

The Land Has a Long Story

The barn on this property is over 150 years old — originally built to cure tobacco, the crop that defined this corner of the Piedmont for generations. Long before that, the Yadkin Valley was home to Native American peoples for thousands of years, and the area is still known for the artifacts that turn up in its fields and riverbanks. It's worth pausing to take that in the next time you're sitting on the porch.

🥾

Two Parks, One Day

Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock are both within an hour and share the scenic Sauratown Trail corridor. Do Pilot Mountain's Big Pinnacle loop in the morning (easy, about 2 hours), then drive to Hanging Rock for the summit trail in the afternoon (moderate, 3 miles round trip). Pack a picnic — there are great spots at both parks.

🗓️

Beat the Hanging Rock Crowds

Hanging Rock's parking lot fills by 9 AM on summer and fall weekends — peak foliage season (mid-October) is especially packed. Arrive before 8:30 AM or plan a weekday visit. The swimming lake is open in summer and fills up just as fast.

🍽️

A Night Out in Winston-Salem

Downtown Winston-Salem is 20 minutes south and consistently surprises first-time visitors. The Arts District around Liberty and 4th Street has great walkability — Cibo Trattoria or Cugino Forno for dinner, then explore from there. Street parking is easy and usually free evenings and weekends.

🚗

Getting Around

A car is essential — Tobaccoville is rural with no rideshare or transit. King is about 8 miles north on US-421 for groceries, gas, and most errands. Winston-Salem is about 20 miles south.

🌿

Don't Miss the Hammock

There's a hammock on the property — a great spot to decompress after a day on the trails. See the Outdoor Lighting section for which switches control the lights in that area.

📦

Ordering Delivery?

Give drivers these directions: the driveway is a gravel driveway beside a brick rancher house — go through the gate and take a hard right to the cabin, do not go straight. Turn on the outdoor porch lights to help the driver spot you at night.
